Welding & Hard-Surfacing
Specialist welding and hard facing are an area that Lion has much for a wealth of experience with and many years of practical and intensive application.
Our processes include many options for applying hard-surface coatings including: MIG, TIG and MAW welding, brazing, power weld, composite rod, cored wire and spray and fuse applications. Options include Stellite, tungsten carbide and industrial diamond products.
The examples on this page indicate some of the standard Lion treatments used on wear surfaces; other alternatives are available to suit your specific requirements.
Type HF1
Sintered and graded tungsten carbide particles (composite rod) set and brazed in a nickel bronze matrix. A good general hard-surface for soft to medium conditions.
Type HF2
Trapezoidal shaped tungsten carbide inserts set and brazed in a nickel bronze matrix. Excellent wear resistant properties.
Type HF3
Tungsten carbide rectangular inserts (normally 15x5x3mm but other sizes are available) set in hard metal/nickel matrix. One of the most popular types for all conditions.
Type HF4
3/8" (9.5mm) Diameter solid carbide inserts drilled and set into the body and in filled with composite rod. Recommended where high impact damage is anticipated.
Type HF5
Large serrated tungsten carbide inserts are pressed into pre-drilled (intererence fit) holes and left flush with the surface. Ideal for materials where heating and welding may be a restriction.
Herring bone type
Using tungsten carbide rectangular tiled inserts (usually 13x5x3mm in size) set in a hard metal matrix laid in chevrons knitted together forming a 90% tungsten blade coverage but more importantly leaving no straight wash routes through the network of tiles providing the customer with a 30% more efficient surface than the standard brickwork style.
Examples
Applying a 3mm butter layer of 316L stainless steel using the MIG welding process.
Hard-facing a set of 20’’ knives with 3/8 cutting composite rod. Selected carbides are brazed into position ensuring tip edges are individually placed to achieve maximum cutting action.
Hard-facing Stabilise blades with Tungsten Carbide inserts, using the Powder Flame spray process.
